Accessibility

What we have done to keep this site usable, what we know is not right yet, and how to tell us about a problem.

We want everyone to be able to use this site, including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification or voice control. This matters here: the people most affected by the flooding include older residents and people with disabilities, and the information on this site is the sort people need when they are already under strain.

We are a residents’ group, so the accessibility regulations that bind public bodies do not apply to us. We aim to meet the WCAG 2.2 AA standard anyway.

What we have done

  • Text and background colours across the site have been checked against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast requirement and meet it.
  • Pages use proper headings in order, so they can be navigated by structure rather than by scrolling.
  • There is a skip link at the top of every page for keyboard users.
  • The site can be used with a keyboard alone.
  • Text reflows and remains readable when the page is magnified or viewed on a phone.
  • Links say where they go rather than saying “click here”.

What we know is not right yet

  • The homepage does not have a main heading in the code, which makes its structure harder to follow with a screen reader. We are fixing this.
  • We have not had a full independent accessibility audit. Our checks have been our own.
  • Documents we publish as evidence, such as scanned reports, plans and photographs, are produced by other organisations and may not be accessible. Where a document matters and you cannot read it, tell us and we will describe its contents or find another way to get it to you.
  • The site is currently in English only.
